Rockingham Court System & Jurisdictions

Rockingham County has two main levels of general jurisdiction courts — Superior Court and District Court. Both are located in the courthouse in Wentworth.

Superior Court handles serious criminal cases (felonies), civil claims over $25,000, and appeals from District Court. Jury trials are held here.

District Court covers a much broader range of everyday cases:

  • Misdemeanors and traffic violations
  • Civil claims up to $25,000
  • Small claims — up to $10,000
  • Family law: divorce, custody, child support, protective orders
  • Juvenile matters

Magistrate Court is part of the District Court system. Magistrates issue arrest and search warrants, set bail, and preside over small claims cases.

Estate matters (estates, guardianships, incompetency proceedings) are handled by the Clerk of Superior Court's office, which acts as the judge in estate and guardianship issues. If you are looking for a specific type of case, start with the Rockingham County page on the NC Judicial Branch website — it lists contacts for the relevant departments.
